18 Mile Creek Ice Climbing Permit

The Western New York Access Coalition is happy to announce that ice climbing is once again permitted in 18-Mile Creek Park, in the town of Hamburg, New York! All ice climbers will be required to obtain an ice climbing permit from the Erie County Parks Department prior to ice climbing. The permit is free, is valid for 1 calendar year, and it must be displayed on the dashboard of your vehicle while climbing in the park.

To obtain your seasonal permit, download and print the “Ice Climbing Permit Application” from the Forms and Applications section of the Erie County Parks website and submit it in person at the Parks Department office in the Rath Building at 95 Franklin St, Room 1260. If you are unable to submit your permit in person, it can be mailed in, however it must be notarized as a valid photo ID must be provided at the time of application. If you do not have access to a printer, copies of the application form are available at the Parks offices.

Additionally, the Western New York Access Coalition and Parks Rangers have performed a survey of all the known ice climbs and climbing areas in 18 Mile Creek park. As a result of the survey, all climbs are marked and numbered with a blaze, and a map will be made available to the general public. We realize that ice climbs are ephemeral by nature and that we may have missed climbs during this survey. Ice climbing is limited to “known” climbs, so if anyone is aware of any climbs that were missed or should a new line be climbed, please reach out to #WNYAccess via our contact form so we can have it added to the map.

We want to thank everyone for their patience while #WNYAccess has been working with the Parks Department to reinstate ice climbing at 18 Mile Creek Park over this past year.
